The “Separation from God” Concept

Have you ever heard that your sins have separated you from God?

I was told that my sins “separated” me from God and that I would be “eternally separated” if I didn’t put my faith in Jesus. But it was always emphasised that this was my fault and my choice.

So I separated myself from god by choice the day I was conceived/born?? And then I had to make choices every day not to keep sinning and separating myself – even though I didn’t know what I was doing to cause this separation that I was born with … Or else I’d be separated forever?? And that’s my fault and choice too?? How??

I didn’t mentally choose to separate myself from God. The natural conclusion then is that he separated himself from me. And that he made some decision that would bring about my eternal separation if I didn’t do something about it!

Wow that gives me a hell of a lot of power. My salvation is in my hands and is my choice and my fault if I don’t choose it – because God made it that way.

Where is this in the Bible?? There is one verse in Isaiah 59 that says “your sins have separated between you and your God” – not separated from. Then in Colossians 1:21 “you were alienated … in your minds!”

Separation is not reality! It is an illusion of the mind which causes us to feel there is a gap “between you and your God.” Don’t let anyone tell you that anything you have done or will do has any power to separate you from God.
Romans 8:38-39 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons … Neither height (heavens) nor depth (hell) nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate you from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord!
